Jeunesses Musicales
International Conducting Competition
The Grand Hall of the Romanian Athenaeum was once again the host of the Jeunesses Musicales Gala Concert. The Concert marked the ending of the 11th edition of the Jeunesses Musicales International Conducting Competition, one of the most important competitions of its kind, dedicated exclusively to young artists. During the five days of the competition young orchestral conductors from all over the world displayed their artistry, skills and talent before a jury formed of distinguished personalities: Sigmund Thorp (Jury President), Gabriel Bebeșelea, Christian Ehwald, Cristian Mandeal, Bujor Prelipcean, Nayden Todorov and Andras Vass.
The Gala Concert marks each time the final round of the competition during which the final ranking is decided. The eliminatory rounds which the competitors had to face brought under the spotlight the remarkable talent of three artists: Nicolò Foron, David Bui and Hermes Helfricht, the main protagonists of this edition.
Nicolò Foron won forst prize. He is a German – Italian conductor who graduated from the Royal College of Music in 2021 with a Master of Music in Conducting. He has conducting studied with esteemed Professors Peter Stark, Howard Williams and Toby Purser and composition with Dimitri Scarlatto and Haris Kitos.
In addition to his academic classes he also studies under the guidance of Sir Antonio Pappano and Sir Roger Norrington. He is also a pianist and a composer and despite the fact that he is very young he has already assisted renowned conductors. In the past three years he has had a regular assistantship with Martyn Brabbins with the RCM Philarmonic Orchestra London, regular assistantship in the Budapest Music Center and Concertgebouw Orkest with Peter Eötvös, assistantship with Riccardo Muti in the production of Le Nozze di Figaro, Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini, Ravenna and Orchester of the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg for Alan Gilbert.
This year’s edition featured renowned young cellist Ștefan Cazacu. His story in the realm of music is written along together with his travelling companion – a collection cello played by Ștefan Cazacu since he was 15. The instrument is a precious gift received from his father, Marin Cazacu (one of the greatest cellist in Romania), and it was produced over 100 years ago (in 1917), in Turin, Italy, by the string-instrument maker Georg Ullman.
The event is organized by Elite Art Club UNESCO, the sole representative of Jeunesses Musicales in Romania.
