11th International Conducting Competition

Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest

STATUTE

1.1. The eleventh edition of the International Conducting Competition Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest for young conductors aims to promote talented young conductors, under the age of 36. The competition is dedicated to emerging orchestra conductors.

1.2. The competition will take place in August 22 – 26, 2021 in Bucharest, at the Romanian Athenaeum, Benjamin Franklin Street, no. 1-3, sector 1, Bucharest.

1.3.The official pianists of the Competition are Verona Maier and Raluca Ouatu.

1.4. The official soloist of the Competition is Ștefan Cazacu.

1.5.The official orchestra of the Competition is the Romanian Youth Orchestra.

1.6.The official language of the Competition is English. All participants are required to have basic English speaking and understanding skills.

1.7. The competition is organized by Elite Art Club UNESCO, the sole representative of Jeunesses Musicales International in Romania.

2.1. The competition is open to conductors of all nationalities under the age of 36, i.e. born after August 25, 1985.

2.2. The deadline for submitting the application is June 13, 2021, 23:59 CET. Only applications submitted using the online application form found on the website www.bucharestcompetition.ro will be accepted.

2.3. Candidates must submit the following documents:

a. The online application form in English. The form is found on the website, below the statute.

b. Scanned copy of passport or national identity papers

c. A biography in English, between 250 and 600 words regarding the candidate’s artistic activity. Please note that we only accept biographies and we do NOT accept Curriculum Vitae. Biographies under 250 words will not be accepted.

d. 1 letter of recommendation in English from a conductor, teacher or concertmaster. The letter must contain the signature of the conductor/teacher/concertmaster and when possible the header of the institution and the seal of the institution. If the recommendation is not in English, the candidate must also submit a translation which does not need to be sworn. Only 1 letter of recommendation per participant is allowed. We do not accept handwritten recommendations.

e. 1 recent photograph, resolution 300 DPI in .tif or .jpg. We do NOT accept photos that are less than 300 DPI and we do not accept scanned copies of printed photographs. The photo should be suitable for publication.

f. Video material, 10 – 15 minutes long.

Admission in the first round will be based mostly on the video which makes for 85% of the final grade. The remaining 15% will be determined by the recommendation letter and the biography.

Links to online platforms (such as YouTube, Vimeo etc) and links to transfer platforms (such as WeTransfer) will be accepted.

The candidate must be visible from the front and the sound must be of good quality.

The candidate must be visible throughout the entire video – please note that we do NOT accept videos where the candidate is not visible or is visible mostly from the back. We also do not accept videos which feature close-ups of the orchestra, the soloists, the ballet dancers, the public, the concert hall etc. The candidate must be visible at all times.

We do not accept videos which are under 10 minutes.

If the video is longer than 15 minutes, the jury members will choose 10 – 15 minutes at random and the grade will be based solely on those 10 – 15 minutes.

Only videos in which the candidate conducts an orchestra or two pianos will be accepted.

g. Proof of payment

2.4. If the candidate does not receive an e-mail from the organization within 3 business days accepting the application then they should contact the organization at concurs@bucharestcompetition.ro or +40748 100 279.

2.5. All documents (a – g) are mandatory.

2.6. No other documents, except the ones listed above, will be taken into consideration.

2.7. Please note that we do not accept handwritten documents. The biography and the letter of recommendation must be typed.

2.8. To be accepted, the application form must be submitted online via this website: https://www.bucharestcompetition.ro/. 2.9.We kindly ask you to read carefully the Personal data protection policy – GDPR before sending your application form. If you do not accept (tick the box) the Elite Art Club UNESCO personal data protection policy, as it is expressed on the website we will not accept your application form and we will not process any of your data. 2.10. The participants are informed and they freely and explicitly express their consent for authorizing Elite Art Club UNESCO to use (unlimited in time and territory) all the video, audio and photographic recordings created during the event and they declare that they agree for these recordings to be used by Elite Art Club UNESCO in all information and promotional materials for the event. This consent is given by ticking the respective box before sending the application. 2.11. The professors and all other collaborators are asked to carefully read the Data protection policy – GDPR. We inform you that we treat the processing of your personal data with the utmost care for more details you can contact us in the ways specified in our Personal Data Protection Policy.

2.12. The application fee is 100 euro and will be paid in the following account:

2.13. Please include your full name in the transfer reference and the mention “application fee”.

2.14. The candidates who will send their application before April 30, 2021 will benefit from a 25% discount off the application fee.

2.15. This application fee is refundable. The candidate can ask for a refund for whatever reason before June 13th. Starting with June 13th the fee will no longer be refundable. All bank charges for the refund will be paid by the candidate. Please allow 4 to 5 months for the refund.

2.16. All applications will be reviewed in strict confidentiality by the members of the jury. The jury will select a maximum of 50 contestants to participate in the first round of the competition. The jury may make a reserve list to be used in case any of the 50 contestants will drop out.

2.17. The list of the admitted participants will be published on June 21, 2021 on the www.bucharestcompetition.ro website and by June 21, 2021 all the admitted participants will be contacted by e-mail.

2.18. The registration fee for the participants admitted in the first round is 150 euro and will be paid by July 31, 2021 in the following account:

2.19. Please include your full name in the transfer reference and the mention “registration fee”.

2.20. The registration fee is non-refundable.

2.21. All expenses relating to accommodation, meals and transport lie entirely on the competitors.

2.22. Competitors must bring the scores of the works commissioned for the competition.

3.1. The conductors who will participate in the competition will be assessed by a jury of 7 members, established conductors from Romania and abroad, important personalities of contemporary musical life.

3.2. The lowest and the highest grades assigned by the jury members to each participant shall be eliminated. The arithmetic mean of the remaining grades is the final assessment. The grading system is from 1 to 20, 1 being the lowest mark.

3.3. The 3 participants („the finalists”) will be admitted in the final round based on the arithmetic mean of the grades obtained in the intermediate rounds (2nd and 3rd round).

3.4. The final results will be given after a careful analysis of the finalists’ evolution throughout the competition (rounds 1, 2 and 3) and their performance during the 4th round.

3.5. The participants will be graded based on the following criteria: conducting technique, knowledge of the musical text, expressivity and capacity of communicating with the orchestra.

3.6. Jury members are not allowed to vote for their own students.

3.7. The jury’s deliberations are based on assessments and their decisions will not be subject to appeal.

4.1. The 11th edition of the International Conducting Competition Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest will be divided into 4 rounds:

 

Round I – eliminatory (22 and 23 August – round with 2 pianos)

Round II – eliminatory (24 August – round with orchestra)

Round III (the semi-final) – eliminatory (25 August – round with orchestra and soloist)

Round IV (the final) – 26 August, round with orchestra, soloist and the Gala Concert

 

4.2. No more than 25 participants will be admitted in the second round of the competition.

4.3. No more than 12 participants will be admitted in the third round of the competition.

4.4. No more than 3 participants will be admitted in the final round of the competition. 4.5. At the end of each competition round the list with the admitted participants will be displayed in the competition room and online: www.bucharestcompetition.ro

4.6. The contestants will appear in the competition in alphabetical order.

4.7. The Gala Concert will be scheduled in the evening, in the Great Hall of the Romanian Athenaeum, in front of a public of 800 people.

4.8. The competitors who have not been accepted may assist at the next rounds.

4.9. Participants will transfer to ELITE ART Club UNESCO, free of charge, all property rights for the artistic performances recorded during the competition and the Gala, unlimited in time or territory, in the following situations:

 

a. recording

b. creating copies (all kinds of audio and video forms)

c. marketing

d. posting on the Internet

e. interpretation and reproduction in public

f. satellite radio transmission and re-emission and retransmission

g. online / offline transmission on the Internet. 4.10. The participants are informed and they freely and explicitly express their consent for authorizing Elite Art Club UNESCO to use (unlimited in time and territory) all the video, audio and photographic recordings created during the event and they declare that they agree for these recordings to be used by Elite Art Club UNESCO in all information and promotional materials for the event. This consent is given by ticking the respective box before sending the application.

4.11. Participants are requested to carefully read the Personal data protection policy and to express their option regardin the processing of their personal data by Elite Art Club UNESCO. We would like to mention that we only collect data which is strictly necessary for the organization and development of the competition and all related activities (grading of the candidates, offering prizes).

4.12. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds will be transmitted live via livestream.

5.1. Round I (22 – 23 August 2021)

1. No more than 15 minutes are provided for each participant. The preliminary stage will use reductions for one or two pianos.

2. In the cyclical works or those that are made up of several parts, if the jury does not determine a specific part, the contestants will choose which part they want to conduct.

3. The jury has the right to interrupt the candidate at any time.

 

Repertoire Round I (with 2 pianos):

Compulsory work:

 

  • George Enescu, Romanian Rhapsody no. 1

One of these pieces, to be chosen by the candidate:

  •  Igor Stravinsky: Dumbarton Oaks, 1st movement
  •  Béla Bartók: Tanz-Suite, 1st and 2nd movements (beginning until figure 21)
  •  Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony no. 9, 2nd movement

 

5.2. Round II (24 August 2021)

 

1. Each candidate selected for the second round will conduct the orchestra for maximum 15 minutes.

2. In the cyclical works or those that are made up of several parts, if the jury does not determine a specific part, the contestants will choose which part they want to conduct.

3. The jury has the right to interrupt the candidate at any time

 

Repertoire Round II (with orchestra):

Compulsory work:

  •  Ludwig van Beethoven: Egmont Ouverture

And the participant must choose one of the following:

  • Claude Debussy: Prelude a L’Apres-midi d’un faune
  •  George Enescu: Suite op.9, Preludiu la unison
  •  Gustav Mahler: Blumine, from Symphony no. 1

 

5.3. Round III (25 August 2021) and Repertoire Round III

The candidates selected in round III, will conduct the orchestra for maximum 20 minutes.

One work will be selected by drawing lots on August 24th , from the following list:

  • Dmitri Shostakovitch: Concert for cello and orchestra no 1 – 1st and 4th movement
  •  Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococco theme for cello and orchestra (Fitzenhagen) – the introduction, theme and variations 1,2,3 and 7
  •  Camille Saint Saens: Concert for Cello and Orchestra in A minor op. 33, 2nd and 3rd movement

The jury has the right to interrupt the candidate at any time.

 

5.4. Round IV (26 August 2021) and Repertoire Round IV

The final round of the competition is divided in 2 sections:

In the section which will take place in the morning, each competitor will have 45 minutes for rehearsal and will conduct one of the following works. The works will be selected by drawing lots on August 25th:

I.

  • Felix Mendelssohn: Symphony no 3 – 1st movement
  •  Johannes Brahms: Variations on a Theme by Haydn
  •  Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony no 1, the Classics Symphony

II.

And the jury will select one of the works from Round III.

In the evening the 3 finalists will conduct a Gala Concert. The Concert will begin at 7.00 PM in the Grand Hall of the Romanian Athenaeum.

For the Gala Concert the finalists are required to wear concert attire.

The prizes will be announced by the jury immediately after the concert.

6.1. Four prizes will be offered to the winners:

1st Prize: € 1000 net

2nd Prize: € 750 net

3rd Prize: € 500 net

Prize for the best Romanian conductor: € 300 net

6.2. The jury will also offer opportunities to conduct national and international orchestras.

6.3. Competitors will receive the net amount, after taxes are paid in accordance to the law.

6.4. The organizer is responsible with presenting all the prizes and with paying all the necessary taxes.

6.5. The jury may decide to offer additional, non monetary prizes.

6.6. The jury members will contact the selected finalists directly via email in order to offer conducting opportunities with the Romanian Youth Orchestra, the „Moldova” Philharmonic in Iași, the „Transilvania” State Philharmonic in Cluj-Napoca, the Sofia Philharmonic and the „Pannon” Philharmonic Orchestra.

6.7. The winners will receive the following title:

6.8. All the participants will receive participation certificates for the 1st round.

6.9. By request at concurs@bucharestcompetition.ro semi-finalists will receive attestations stating that they have made it in the semi-finals. The attestation will be sent via email in .pdf and can be sent via courier company if the participant requests this. In the case of the courier company, all costs will be paid by the participant.

6.10. The jury’s deliberations will be secret and its decisions will not be subject to appeal.

6.11. The three finalists will receive the videos of their performances from the 2nd, 3rd and final rounds.

6.12. All other competitors must send an e-mail at concurs@bucharestcompetition.ro with their name and the date on which they conducted. Requests will be received until September 25th. After September 25th no more video requests will be accepted.

6.13. All videos will be sent in October – November 2021.

7.1. A semi-finalist is the candidate who has been accepted in the 3rd round of the Competition.

7.2. Three semi-finalists of the 2019 edition who wish to participate in this year’s Competition will be accepted in the 2nd round directly. The round will take place on August 24, 2021.

7.3. In order to participate in the competition, the semi-finalists must send an e-mail at concurs@bucharestcompetition.ro, and in the e-mail they must specify that they are applying as semi-finalists.

7.4. The mail must contain the following documents:

1. The application form written in English, which can be downloaded from this website page, on the left.

!!! The semi-finalists can’t apply via the online application form. They must download the application form in Word and fill it in.

2. Scanned copy of passport or national identity papers

3. Video material, 10 – 15 minutes long. Online videos and files sent by mail or transfer will be accepted. The candidate must be visible from the front and the sound must be of good quality.

4. If they wish to do so, the candidates may also send

  • 1 recent photograph, resolution 300 DPI in .tif or .jpg.
  • A biography in English, between 250 and 600 words regarding the candidate’s artistic activity.

7.5. If the candidate does not submit a new photograph or biography, the ones from 2019 will be used. The biography and photograph are not used by the jury members during the application review.

7.6. Semi-finalists will be chosen solely based on the video material.

7.7. The candidates will receive their official acceptance letter by e-mail before June 21, 2021.

7.8. The registration fee for the semi-finalists who have been admitted in the 2nd round is 150 euro and will be paid by July 31, 2021 in the following account:

7.10. The registration fee is non-refundable.

8.1 In all matters not covered by the competence of the jury, the project manager reserves the right to make decisions that are irrevocable.

8.2 All disputes relating to provisions in the Statute will be resolved based on the text in Romanian.

8.3 All issues not addressed by these regulations will be covered by Romanian legislation.

8.4 Applying to enter the 11th edition of the International Conducting Competition Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest implies acceptance of all the above mentioned rules.

8.5 The winners of the previous editions can’t compete. 8.6 Please read our Personal data protection policy carefully. Elite Art Club UNESCO assures you that all necessary measures are taken in order to assure compliance with GDPR (REGULATION (EU) 2016/679 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation). We collect the following information: name and surname, email address and/or mailing address, telephone number, sex, nationality, date and place of birth, scanned copy of your identity card/passport, musical studies documents, biography, recommendation letter, video material, photographs, bank information of the winners. You willingly give us this information, directly, when you send the application form.

8.7 For more details on your rights and the way we process your personal data please read our Personal data protection policy. 8.8 We collect data solely for the purpose of the competition: performance assessment and offering prizes.

8.9 We securely store your data on our server and we will keep it for a period of 5 years. Once this time period has expired we will delete your data. If you are a winner, we will delete your data except the email address, the photograph and the biography.

8.10 We may send you information about our competition or masterclass and if you no longer wish to be contacted by us after having participated in the competition, you can unsubscribe at any time.
