Gheorghe Costin

The conductor Gheorghe Costin has studied at the National University of Music in Bucharest and since 1984 he is a member of the Composers and Musicologists Union in Romania.

 

He worked for the Iasi (1988-2001) and Targu Mures (1986-1988) Philharmonics and since 2001 he is the conductor of the „Banatul” Philharmonic in Timisoara. His high quality performances, his amazing repertoire and his sensitivity which characterize a devoted musician are qualities on which Gheorghe Costin has built a solid reputation. He has received frequent invitations from all the orchestras in the country and has made numerous international appearances: „Grand Prix – Maria Callas” – Athens, the  „George Enescu” International Festival and Competition – Bucharest, the „Mario del Monaco” Opera Festival in Fano, „The International Week of New Music” – Bucharest, the International Festival „Music Autumn in Cluj”, the Competition „Pacem in Terris”, the Orchestra Concerts  „Pro Arte”, the International Festival “Musical Timisoara”, the International Festival „ Musical Craiova”, the International Festival In Memoriam Constantin Silvestri, the International Festival W.A. Mozart, the International Piano Competition “Isidor Bajic Memorial”, Serbia.

 

In September 1998, Gheorghe Costin made his debut at the lectern of the Chamber Orchestra „London Schubert Players Orchestra” and at the Windsor International Festival. He has been guided by great conductors – Sergiu Celibidache and Erich Bergel.

 

Some of his most memorable concerts remain those with works by Yannis Xenakis in 1992 (Bucharest) and in 1993 (Cluj), in the presence of the author; following these events he was distinguished with the „Prize of the Critics’ and Interpreters Union in Romania”.

 

Among the artists he has collaborated with we can recall Rudolf Kerer, Grigori Sokolov, Nikolai Suk, Cyprien Katzaris, Ranki Dezsö, Valentin Gheorghiu, Dan Grigore, Ştefan Ruha, Radu Aldulescu, Wolfgang Laufer, Viorica Cortez, Eva Marton, Doris Soffel, Corneliu Murgu and others.
